Johann Joseph Becker

Johann Joseph Becker (baptized February 13, 1738 in Beltheim ; † December 30, 1800 in Mastershausen ) was a Catholic clergyman.

Career and work

He was the only child of the married couple Peter Becker and Margaretha Müller from Frankweiler , a current district of Beltheim. He was ordained on June 16, 1764 and was initially a chaplain in Blankenrath . In 1766 the Cologne Cathedral Chapter transferred the Mastershausen parish to him, where he worked for 44 years. At the same time he was dean of the dean's office in Zell for 18 years.

Becker was a precise, self-confident and contentious man who was very committed to his community and his parishioners. So in 1773 he defied the tithe lords of the long overdue new church building.

During his lifetime, the Mastershausen community had thwarted a foundation to hire a teacher for girls. Since he did not want to let the children atone for this stubbornness, he set up a foundation with 500 Reichstalers in his will, from which, among other things, paper and books were to be purchased for the students. He bequeathed his library with 762 titles to his successor.

He lists 239 relatives in his will, making it an interesting genealogical resource.

Another interesting document from his pen is a visitation report of the Maria Engelport monastery in which he precisely characterized the members of the last convent shortly before its abolition in 1792.
