Johann Joseph Hackl (politician)

Johann Joseph Hackl (sometimes Häckl or Häckhl ) (born May 16, 1716 in St. Pölten ; † October 4, 1791 there ) was an Austrian painter, politician and first mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

Johann Joseph Hackl was born on May 16, 1716 as the son of a cloth maker in St. Pölten. The painter is first mentioned in a document in 1744 when he acknowledged the receipt of twelve guilders for four pictures for the St. Pölten Abbey . He subsequently illustrated some of the writings of Aquilin Hacker . In 1752 he married a daughter of the sculptor Peter Widerin and granddaughter of Jakob Prandtauer .

From 1770 he was a member of the external and from 1779 of the internal council. In accordance with Joseph II's magistrate reform , the first mayoral elections were held in St. Pölten on June 6, 1785, in which Hackl was elected. For reasons of age he resigned his office in 1789 and died on October 4th, 1791 in St. Pölten am Schlagfluss .
