Johann Ludwig Falckner

Johann Ludwig Falckner (* 1787 ; † 1832 ) was a Swiss chemist , physician and pharmacist in Basel .

Falckner was a descendant of Heinrich Falckner (d. 1282), builder of the Klingental monastery. He was a student of the mathematician and physicist Daniel Huber , who in turn was a student of Johann II Bernoulli . His mathematical speculations about the arrangement of the elements were influenced by his knowledge of the dual numbers of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz . He also read Gilbert's Annalen and the Schweiggers Journal (Journal for Chemistry and Physics), in which readers previously wrote about the relationships between elements following an article by Johann Ludwig Georg Meinecke (1781–1823) from 1819. He also carried out stoichiometric studies in his own laboratory. He was a doctor of medicine and philosophy.

In 1824 he published his book Contributions to Stoichiometry and Chemical Statics , in which he tried to organize the chemical elements known at the time. According to Krätz, his considerations go in the direction of Prout's hypothesis ( William Prout , 1815) of the structure of the elements from hydrogen.

Little is known about him. He had a doctorate in medicine and suffered from poor health.

Its pioneering role and the Meineckes in the prehistory of the periodic table before Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner (Triaden, 1829) was discovered in 1972 by Otto Krätz .

He had been a member of the Swiss Society for Natural Sciences since 1787 .
