Johann Ludwig Heim (geologist)

Johann Ludwig Heim the Younger (born June 29, 1741 in Solz , † January 19, 1819 in Meiningen ) was a German Protestant theologian , mineralogist and geologist .

Life

Heim was a son of the pastor Johann Ludwig Heim . He gave his children their first lessons. Later he moved to the Meininger Lyzeum illustrious . There his interest in mineralogy was awakened, which would accompany him until his death. After graduating from the Lyceum, he moved to the University of Jena . There he studied theology, according to his father's wishes, but he also devoted himself to geosciences .

Heim returned to Meiningen after completing his studies. There he became a prince educator for the later Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen . In 1775 he accompanied the prince together with his brother Karl to the University of Strasbourg . Heim was able to continue his studies there. He also started his mineral collection there, which he handed over to the firm for the entire mineralogy in Jena in 1816 .

After Heim returned to Meiningen with the princes, he got a job at the consistory . He was first appointed consistorial councilor , court counselor of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen and finally there in 1803 a real common council . In the end he was Vice-President of the Consistory. In addition to his work in the consistory, he was able to conduct extensive geoscientific research.

The Berlin doctor Ernst Ludwig Heim was his brother.
