The state-run Henfling grammar school is one of two grammar schools in the southern Thuringian district town of Meiningen . Since March 2019 it has been the pilot school of the Thuringian project "Schools in the digital world". The grammar school was called the Bernhardinum grammar school until 1945 . Since then, it has been named after Johann Ernst Henfling, who, by means of a will in 1720, made it possible to expand the Lyceum illustrious with a 6th grade and a boarding school, thereby increasing the status of the school with direct access to the university. The Henfling-Gymnasium is located in the Jerusalem (Meiningen) district .

history

Today's Henfling-Gymnasium was founded in 1510 as a Latin school through the humanistic reform of the urban trivial school by Balthasargler and is therefore one of the oldest still existing high schools in Thuringia. Theologians supervised the lessons. The Classical Philology curriculum was added with Greek (1598) and Hebrew (1632) . On November 4, 1705 he was elevated to the Lyceum illustrious . By enlightened citizens to Johann Ernst Henfling took place mid-18th century an extension of the Lyceum illustrious with the establishment of Selecta . Since 1742, the "Henflingtag" has been celebrated at the school every year on this occasion. In 1799 the following subjects were taught in the Selekta: Latin (8 hours per week), Greek (4), Hebrew, German, history, mathematics, physics and philosophy (2 each).

In 1821 the Lyzeum illustrious moved into a new school building, which was built by the Duchess Louise Eleonore zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg on the site of the Franciscan monastery in Meiningen , which was largely demolished in 1817 . After Bernhard I (Saxony-Meiningen) it was called the Bernhardinum Gymnasium . The first rector was the previous Ephorus Johann Konrad Schaubach . A school library was also built under him. Up until 1938 there were no noteworthy changes to the structure and form of teaching of the grammar school.

In 1838, another secondary school was opened in Meiningen, which provided the basics for studying at technical universities and a little later, as the Herzogliches Realgymnasium Meiningen, was politically equivalent to the humanistic grammar school Bernhardinum. In addition, from 1809 onwards, the “Knieselschen Anstalten” and the “von Westhoven-Schule”, two private secondary schools for girls , were established in Meiningen , which were merged into the Charlottenschule ( Lyceum ) in 1915 and merged as the girls 'secondary school with the secondary school and the boys ' secondary school in 1936. Schools at the Bernhardinum grammar school had to cease after the last air raid on Meiningen on February 23, 1945.

Henfling High School

By order of the Soviet occupying forces , all high schools and grammar schools in the city were combined in the Bernhardinum grammar school building and school operations were resumed on October 8, 1945. The grammar school branch of the school was named "Henfling-Gymnasium" on November 19, 1945 in order to get rid of the old name of feudal origin. The "Law for the Democratization of German Schools" of 1946 now introduced four years of secondary school from 9th to 12th grade. In the first years after the war, the pupils were tested separately depending on the type of school. From 1949 the school was called Henfling-Oberschule instead of Henfling-Gymnasium, and from 1959 it was called the Extended High School "Henfling" Meiningen (EOS).

In 1954 a boarding school was set up for foreign students. In 1963, the "Henfling" extended high school moved into the building in today's Neu-Ulmer-Straße, which was built as a Georgen Hospital and later used as a girls' school. For several years, the students were able to complete a skilled worker training in addition to the Abitur .

After German reunification , the Extended Oberschule was renamed Henfling-Gymnasium again and introduced classes from 5th to 12th grades.

In 1991 a second grammar school was founded in Meiningen in the former Hans Beimler secondary school in Jerusalem, the Moritz Seebeck grammar school. In 1997, both grammar schools merged to form the Henfling grammar school at the Jerusalem location, as the necessary structural extensions can be carried out better here.

The school building was built in 1973 as a polytechnic high school (POS) " Hans Beimler " in prefabricated construction and was considerably enlarged in 1997 with an extension. The two structures are connected by a glazed atrium . 25 classes (2019/20) are currently being taught in the building complex.

In addition to the 62 classrooms, the grammar school has a cafeteria and a sun terrace, its own library (running from 1589 to today) in various languages with a reading room, an auditorium and a school yard. The three-field hall of the multi-hall opposite the school building is used as a school sports hall . Next to the multi hall is the school sports field with a tartan track and basketball court.

The high school also has a school observatory , which enables a focus on astronomy .
