Karl Schaller

Karl Schaller (born March 29, 1846 in Wasungen ; † October 17, 1922 in Meiningen ) was a lawyer , minister of state , district administrator and mayor of the city of Meiningen.

Life

After visiting the school Bernhardinum in Meiningen Karl Schaller graduated at the Universities of Heidelberg , Leipzig and Jena to study law . During his studies in Heidelberg in 1864 he became a member of the Frankonia Heidelberg fraternity . He then joined the judicial service of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen , where he worked as a judge in Hildburghausen , Graefenthal and Sonneberg . In 1882, Schaller was appointed mayor of the royal seat of Meiningen to succeed Rudolf von Ziller . He held this office until 1889, after which he took over the role of district administrator for the district of Meiningen .

In 1890, Schaller was employed as a government councilor and lecturer in the State Ministry of Saxony-Meiningen in the departments of the interior and church and school matters. He was also a member of the National Liberal Party and had a mandate for it in the Meiningen state parliament . In 1900, Duke Georg II appointed Karl Schaller a Councilor of State and made him head of the Interior Department. From 1912 to 1918 he was Minister of State of the Duchy. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in 1917 the city of Meiningen granted him honorary citizenship . After the November Revolution and the abdication of Duke Bernhard III. Karl Schaller had to give up his office after the resignation of the cabinet under his leadership . In 1922, Schaller was elected to the Meiningen municipal council, which he chaired until his death. The "Schallerstraße" in Meiningen's Ost district is named after him.
