Johann Konrad Schaubach (also Johannes Conrad ; born January 20, 1764 in Meiningen , † December 10, 1849 ibid) was a German astronomer and high school teacher .

Life

Schaubach was the son of a bricklayer family ancestral in Meiningen since the Thirty Years' War . His brother was the architect Johann Andreas Schaubach . He attended the illustrious Lyceum in his hometown and was prepared for his studies in various ways. In 1783 he began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Göttingen . The student days were marked by his poor financial situation, because his parents' house could not contribute much. His only income was a scholarship and a free meal . He later worked as a private tutor in Göttingen . After he had passed the theological exam and was accepted into the circle of candidates for preaching office in his homeland in 1787, he returned to Göttingen, where he devoted himself increasingly to the study of mathematics and physics .

Schaubach turned down offers from Stralsund and Eutin to continue his studies. 1789 Finally he took a call to the Pädagogium Ilfeld on. There he worked as a collaborator until he followed another call back to Meiningen in 1791. There he became school inspector at the Lyceum illustrious, in 1806 Ephorus and finally - when the educational institution was elevated to a high school - its first rector. In 1835 he retired. Up until then he had had a major impact on the school. During his time the school library was also built. In 1816 he was appointed consistorial councilor.

In 1799 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

While his interest in theology quickly waned, he devoted himself particularly to the history of astronomy and is known as the father of the history of ancient astronomy.
