Johann Machabeus

Johann Machabeus actually: John Mac Alpine or John MacAlpine , also: Maccabeus, Machabeus, Maccabe, Machabe, McBee, Macabaeus (* before 1500 in Scotland ; † December 5/6 , 1557 in Copenhagen ) was a Scottish reformer and Protestant theologian.

Life

Machabeus, who came from a noble family, studied at a Scottish university. He was prior of the Dominican Monastery in Perth from 1532 to 1534 , but had to flee Scotland when he was accused of heresy with Alexander Alesius and others . Via England he came to Cologne , where he obtained the degree of baccalaureus in theology at the university there . On November 25, 1540, he had enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , attended the lectures of Martin Luther and received the scholarly name Machabeus from Philipp Melanchthon .

In Wittenberg he acquired on February 3, 1542 licentiate in theology and a doctorate on 9 February 1542 to the doctor of theology. He was eligible for a position in theology at the University of Strasbourg , but went to the University of Copenhagen in the year of his doctorate , where he became professor of theology. There he read about Romans , the Gospel of John and the Loci communes of Philip Melanchthon . He was asked to return home, but Christian III stopped him . Denmark and Norway from this project. In 1544/45 and 1549/50 he was rector of the University of Copenhagen.

The son Christian Machabaeus (1541–1598) is known from his marriage to Agnes Matheson.
