Johann Nepomuk Graf Koháry (born 1733 ; died around 1780, other information November 12, 1800, in Tbilisi ) was the last tenant of the Burgtheater in Vienna from 1770 to 1776 .

family

Johann Nepomuk came from the Hungarian magnate family Koháry and was the youngest son of Count Andreas (1694–1757) and Margareta Therese Thavonath von Thavon. In 1759 he married Baroness Maria Theresia Pinelli, with whom he had three children.

Impresario of the court theater

In 1770 Johann Nepomuk Koháry leased the court theater and succeeded d'Afflissio as its impresario . In 1772 he abolished the French theater at the Burgtheater and replaced it with the Italian opera buffa, but got increasingly into financial difficulties and had to resign as director. The theater was now provisionally run and Koháry remained active in an advisory capacity. In addition to the organizational problems, there was a scandal with his wife, about which no details have been passed. In 1776 the theater went bankrupt. It was nationalized and reopened on February 17, 1776 by Emperor Joseph II as the Teutsches Nationaltheater next to the castle .

Journey to the Orient

After the bankruptcy of the theater, Johann Nepomuk withdrew to the family castle Sankt Anton . There he was visited by Jacob Reineggs , formerly one of his actors. They traveled to the Orient together. After a stay in Constantinople , they reached the court of King Erekle II via Smyrna in Tbilisi . In the travelogue written by Reineggs, Koháry died of a venereal disease in the Caucasus around 1780 . The exact time of death is not known.
