Jacob Reineggs

Jacob Reineggs (born November 28, 1744 in Eisleben , † April 7, 1793 in Saint Petersburg ) originally Christian Rudolf Ehlich , was a German adventurer and diplomat of the 18th century.

Life

Reineggs, who came from Saxony , had many different professions in his youth. He was a bader in Leipzig , an actor in Vienna , a doctor in Hungary and a naturalist in Poland . He later traveled to Turkey and on to Georgia , where he gained the trust of King Irakli II , who made Reineggs his court doctor. In 1782 he moved to Saint Petersburg , where he became one of the confidants of Prince Potjomkin . He took part in some Russian diplomatic missions in the Caucasus , where he played a not insignificant role in the signing of the Treaty of Georgievsk of 1783. At the end of his life he was a councilor, director of the surgical school and secretary of the medical council. In 1786 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . On January 5, 1792 he was nicknamed Jason VI. elected as a member (matriculation no. 941) of the Leopoldina .

Works

One of his most famous works is the "General Historical-Topographical Description of the Caucasus".
