Johann Philipp Odelem

Johann Philipp Odelem (* uncertain: 1680 in Braunschweig ; † uncertain: after 1730) was a German lawyer , lawyer and philosopher .

Live and act

Odelem studied law at the University of Helmstedt and received his doctorate in law from the University of Halle in 1702 . In Magdeburg he worked as a criminal defense lawyer. It is unclear whether he - as was sometimes claimed in older literature - was later mayor of Braunschweig.

Among Odelem's writings, the two-part, 360-page collection of all kinds of exquisite curious legal matters is of interest. 19 legal cases from different areas of law are presented in vivid language, such as canonical and inheritance law proceedings as well as criminal proceedings. After a brief introduction to the legal problem, a detailed description of the facts follows. In his case stories, Odelem draws primarily from his own legal experience, e. B. his defense of a Magdeburg widow who was suspected of child murder. Of regional importance are its two 1705 and 1801 posthumously published essays on the castle Salzdahlum and the Maiden Convent Salzdahlum .
