Johann Russe

Johann Russe (* around 1506 in Lunden ; † 1555 ) was a chronicler of the history of Dithmarsch .

Russe was the son of a landowner in Norderdithmarschen . He was probably born before 1506, his last note going back to an event in 1555.

He received his first lessons from the local chaplain, and he probably later studied law at a German university. His writings reveal a knowledge of Latin and Greek. Russe lived as a citizen in Lunden and was made forty-eight , that is, co-regent. His interest in the Dithmarsch past showed itself in different ways: He collected chronicles, books, battle songs, news from church registers and old copies of the state laws.

The Eiderstedt Chronicle (reporting years 1103 to 1547) contained in a codex of Russe was probably written by the land clerk Dirck Scriver, a member of a farm owner family in the Eiderstedt region with the participation of his brother Wenni Sywens from around 1472 and was continued several times by other family members.

Russes early death prevented the creation of a planned national history. After the conquest of the country, his material ended up in the royal library in Copenhagen ; only a part was published. Russe provided important sources for the work of the most important Dithmarsch chronicler, Neocorus , who only knew parts of the collection.
