Johann Samuel Gottlob Gräf (born October 26, 1736 in Wenigensömmern , Thuringia , † June 19, 1800 in Gera ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Johann Samuel Gottlob Gräf devoted himself to theology and after completing his studies initially worked as a private tutor for some time. In 1760 he became a catechist at the Salvator Church in Gera . In 1764 he advanced to the preacher of the breeding and orphanage church in that city. In 1772, because of his talent as a speaker, he was made court preacher to the Count of Russia and in 1788 archdeacon and assessor of the consistory . He died in Gera in 1800 at the age of 63.

It was only as court preacher that Gräf felt comfortable enough to continue literary work he had started earlier and in particular to complete his German translation of the well-known English work of Bishop Joseph Hall of Norwich († 1656) on the Holy Scriptures . It appeared under the title Reflections on the Biblical Stories; Released in an improved translation and with a few notes (4 volumes, Gera and Leipzig 1771–74). As a pulpit speaker, Graef was very popular. The following sermons came out in print:

  • Sermon given on the 18th Sunday after Trinity after the fire in Gera , Gera 1781
  • Three sermons on special occasions , Gera 1790
  • Attempt in sermons on some psalms , Gera 1791
