Johann Sturany (born May 13, 1831 in Hütteldorf ; † March 17, 1912 in Vienna ) was an Austrian builder and architect .

Life

Johann Sturany was the son of a bricklayer who immigrated from Bohemia and who became a city architect in Vienna. He had received practical training and in 1858 was granted a master builder license. In the same year he married the wealthy industrialist daughter Betty Spiering. He became one of the most successful builders of the Vienna Ringstrasse era . Due to real estate ownership, he was also able to work as a building contractor. He was also involved in professional associations and co-founded the Association of Builders of Lower Austria . As a result, he was very socially respected in the period around 1880, received high medals, became court architect and was able to afford expensive private buildings, such as a city palace on Schottenring ( Palais Sturany ), in which celebrities of the time also frequented. After he retired into private life in the mid-1880s, his sons took over the company, but they were no longer as successful. His son Rudolf Sturany was a zoologist.

meaning

Above all, Sturany was a very successful builder in the era of the Ringstrasse era. As a planning architect, he only emerged in less important buildings. He started with simple residential buildings, but then adopted the representative formal language of historicism for buildings in the outskirts as well. His personal share in the buildings of the late period, in which his sons were already active in the company, can no longer be determined.
