Johann Wetzel (master builder)

Johann Wetzel (born April 4, 1798 in Bremen , † March 25, 1880 in Bremen) was a German master builder and master builder at St. Petri Cathedral .

biography

Wetzel was the son of a master mason. He graduated from the cathedral school, made a study trip to Italy in 1821 and passed his master's examination in 1825. He then became a master builder at Bremen Cathedral. He made a lithograph sketch for the westwork at the cathedral . Further drawings of the cathedral were made, which served as templates for Hermann Alexander Müller's 1861 work on the cathedral. In 1845, Wetzel and Lüder Rutenberg won first prize in an architectural competition for their design for the new Kunsthalle Bremen . The plans revised by Rutenberg were implemented in 1847/49. Wetzel was elected to Bremen's citizenship in 1848 by the citizens of Neustadt .
