Johann von Mutterstadt real name Johann Seffried (* around 1400 in Mutterstadt , Pfalz , † April 16, 1472 in Speyer ) was a Catholic priest, cathedral vicar and imperial notary in Speyer; as well as an early historian of the Principality of Speyer .

Live and act

Johann von Mutterstadt came from the Palatinate mother city, near Speyer and was actually called Johann Seffried. His father Nikolaus Seffried officiated there as mayor, his mother Anna Maria was born Kirsch. Johann Seffried named himself following the custom of his time, after the place of origin Johann von Mutterstadt . It is also known under this name in local history.

From 1426 his work as priest and cathedral vicar is documented in Speyer, where he was in charge of the St. Gregorius altar at the cathedral. In 1431, he was also referred to as an imperial notary in a document. On May 5, 1451 he was enrolled at the University of Heidelberg and on May 31, 1455 at the University of Cologne . The clergyman also had a second benefice on the St. Peters altar in the crypt of the Speyer Cathedral . At the cathedral monastery he endowed annual memories for himself, his parents and his housekeeper Anna Graselnbach.

Bishop Matthias von Rammung (1417–1478) valued the cleric and entrusted him with the task of writing a historical work about the diocese and the bishops. This work was called Chronicon Spirense and closes at the beginning of 1468. It has been preserved in copies, but has been forgotten. Only the historian Johann Georg von Eckhart (1664-1730) brought it out again in 1724 in his work Corpus historicum medii aevi . In 1742, Professor Heinrich Christian von Senckenberg (1704–1768) published it in Volume 6 of his Selecta iuris et historiarum

The chronicle has remained an important historical source work to the present day, especially since it also contains many lost grave inscriptions. Chronologically and factually, it is often wrong, especially in the early sections, where the author himself had to make use of older records.

Johann von Mutterstadt is mentioned in many historical and local history works a. a. 1786 in Johann Goswin Widder 's early standard work “Attempt at a Complete Geographical-Historical Description of the Electoral Palatinate on the Rheine” , Volume 2, Page 376.

Franz Xaver Remling dedicates a separate biographical chapter to Johann von Mutterstadt in his History of the Bishops of Speyer , Volume 1, Pages 6 and 7.

In the birthplace of Mutterstadt , Johannes-Sefrit-Strasse is named after the priest historian .

His nephew of the same name, Johannes Mutterstadt Junior, died in Speyer in 1492 and was also a cleric at the cathedral monastery.
