Johannes Nepomuk chapel shrine in Wiener Neustadt

The Johannes-Nepomuk-Chapel on the Johann-von-Nepomuk-Platz in Wiener Neustadt is a chapel shrine dedicated to the saint.

history

The statue of Johannes Nepomuk , which stands today on Johann-von-Nepomuk-Platz in Wiener Neustadt, was originally erected in 1704 by the bridge over the moat at the Wiener Tor. It was donated by the innkeeper Kaspar Adam Exner. The protective chapel was built in 1756 by the stonemason Anton Obermayer.

The small square in today's Wiener Straße, where the chapel was located, originally belonged to the city of Wiener Neustadt and was acquired in 1801 by the stonemason Josef Gottschall as a storage place for his stones. In the purchase agreement, it was specifically stipulated that the space was only used as a warehouse and could not be built in now or later, and blocking access to the chapel was also prohibited.

Joseph Wohlmuth, a master wagoner and later owner, had no need for the stone storage area. On March 31, 1819, he offered the city to remove the stones and surround the square with a grille, provided that the servitude was changed accordingly. He wanted to close the chapel itself with a grille to protect the relics .

The blacksmith Mathias Grünkranz, who meanwhile owned the house near the chapel, asked the magistrate of Wiener Neustadt to remove the chapel at his own expense and to be allowed to reposition it at a location specified by the city. On March 23, 1853, a city commission determined a plot of land near what was then Mayerhofermühle in today's Grazer Strasse as the new location.

In 1890 the chapel with the Johannes Nepomuk statue was relocated again due to the regulation of the ring. Because of the damage suffered and because the chapel was in the way here, it was demolished again in 1901 and deposited in the basement of the suburban church . In 1970 or 1979 the chapel and the Johannes-Nepomuk-Statue opposite the post office on Johann-von-Nepomuk-Platz were put up again.

The chapel is a listed building .
