Building history

The statue of St. John Nepomuk from 1754 is depicted with a crucifix and a martyr's palm , on his head he wears the biretta with the star wreath. It stands on a four-sided stone base.

This sacred small building originally stood on the church forecourt to the left of the church. When the war memorial was built in 1924, it was moved to the front of the church and to the rear in 1939 when the church was being renovated. In the first place of the statue there has been a mission cross with the inscription “Ave crux, spes unica!” Since 1965 . In 1978 the statue was renovated and moved back to the front of the church.

background

The Bohemian King Wenceslaus IV had the priest Johannes Nepomuk fall from the Charles Bridge in Prague into the Vltava and drowned on March 20, 1393 . St. Nepomuk is therefore considered a "bridge saint". According to legend, he is said to have refused to break the secret of confession : He did not want to tell the king what his wife had confessed to him. However, the real reason for his execution was a political conflict between his bishop and the king. In 1729 Johannes Nepomuk was canonized. In the Baroque period , especially in the countries of the Habsburg Monarchy, an intense cult of Nepomuk arose . Sculptures of St. Nepomuk are next to crosses and depictions of Mary the most common Christian stone figures to be found outside of churches and are very often on or next to bridges.
