Johannes Aquila , also Johannes Aquila de Radkersburgensis , (* 14th century; † 15th century) was a painter and manager of a painter's workshop and probably also a builder and architect.

Life

Dates of birth and death of the end of the 14th century and John Aquila, who was active in the beginning of the 15th century, are not known. He portrayed himself in his works and signed his works, with which he already appeared as a self-confident artist in the Middle Ages. It is possible that these are the oldest surviving self-portraits in Europe. The signature Johannes Aquila de Rakersburga oriundus can be seen in the parish church of St. Martin in Martjanci. John Aquila showed his education with inscriptions in impeccable Latin. His painting and architectural elements show many influences from Italy, Tyrol, Vienna and Bohemia, which is why it is assumed that Johannes Aquila got inspiration and further training from wandering artists and thus kept himself up to date.
