The Roman Catholic parish church of Bad Radkersburg is in the town of Bad Radkersburg in Styria . The parish church of St. John the Baptist belongs to the Radkersburg deanery in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

The church was named in a document in 1402. An independent parish is assumed for the end of the 15th century after the separation from the Ruprechtskirche, which was demolished in 1545, in today's Slovenian Oberradkersburg . The Gothic pillar basilica from the 14th century was changed in the late Gothic style. In the late 19th century, most of the vault ribs were chipped off and the vault in the choir was renewed. The interior was restored in 1972 and the exterior was restored in 1980.

architecture

The western facade of the founding church was integrated directly into the western city wall of the 14th century and is the oldest part of the three-aisled, four-bay nave. The central nave has mighty pillar arcades and above it arcades of light under a pointed arched needle cap barrel on semicircular wall services. The lower aisles were re-vaulted after a fire in the 16th century. In the south aisle and in the western yoke of the north aisle the star rib vaults have been preserved. Shifted to the north from the axis, the two-bay choir with five-eighth end , built around 1400, connects to the nave in the east . Johannes Aquila is accepted as the builder of the choir, the stair tower and the sacristy . In the choir corner, between the main portal in the south aisle and the choir, there is a stair tower. On the outside of the stair tower wall, remains of frescoes by Johannes Aquila are visible, which show a hand with the attribute of a church building (probably a representation of St. Wolfgang of Regensburg or St. Virgil of Salzburg ) and fragments of scriptures. The buttresses of the choir are stepped three times. The polygonal end of the choir shows a late Gothic bust of the master builder on the outside. A sacristy was also built in the northern corner of the choir around 1400. In the south wall of the choir there is a delicate Gothic niche with blind arcades. At the end of the choir are three ogival sacraments niches. In the north choir wall is the sacristy portal with a keel arch and late Gothic fittings for the door. The late Gothic stairs to the gallery in the south aisle are coats of arms of the bishops Matthias Scheit and Christoph von Zach . The organ gallery from the 18th century in the west bays rests on two further pillars in the central nave. An inscription plaque from 1515 refers to the erection of the fron arch with Niklas Wechsler. The west tower with a square base with a crossed pointed arch portal has octagonal upper floors and an eight-part tent roof. In 1972, two bricked up late Gothic tracery windows were uncovered on the west side. In the south aisle is a richly designed main portal with figure canopies made of Aflenz sandstone from the beginning of the 16th century.

Outside and inside the church has marble tombstones and epitaphs from the 15th to 18th centuries.

Furnishing

The high altar is from 1906 shows the miraculous image Black Madonna of Czestochowa from the 18th century. The two side altars around 1750 show a late Gothic crucifix around 1510 on the left. The pulpit around 1790. Under the organ gallery is a remarkable picture of the Death of St. Joseph from the middle of the 18th century. The gallery shows the altar sheet Baptism of Christ of the former baroque high altar from 1720 by the painter Alois Bogner, restored in 1855 by the painter Josef Wonsiedler. There are some late baroque figures of saints. The inlaid choir stalls with the partially renewed church stalls are from the middle of the 18th century. The wrought iron communion grille shows the indication JCRB 1746.

The organ was rebuilt in 1963. There is a bell from 1836.
