Johannes Beckmann (theologian)

Johannes Beckmann (born May 2, 1901 in Essen , † December 17, 1971 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was a German theologian and church historian.

Life

The son of the locksmith Heinrich attended the Immensee grammar school from 1914 to 1921, the Chur seminary from 1921 to 1923 and the Wolhusen mission seminar from 1923 to 1926. He became a member of the Bethlehem Mission Society. After being ordained a priest in 1926, he studied theology from 1926 to 1930 at the University of Münster . After receiving his doctorate in Münster , he taught from 1930 to 1962 as a professor of church history and missiology at the Wolhusen and Schöneck mission seminars . In 1945 he founded the New Journal for Mission Studies . The University of Friborg awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1970.
