Johannes Bernsau

Johannes Bernsau (* March 1675 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ); † March 1750 there ) was Mayor of Elberfeld.

Johannes Bernsau came from the Bernsau family, which was derived from the Lords of Bernsau at Hardenberg Castle, north of Elberfeld . He was born the son of his father Johannes Bernsau Senior and his second wife Maria Wichelhausen (1655–1688) and was baptized on March 10, 1675. Through his first wife Anna Herzlieb Kirberg (1626–1663) he inherited the farm on the Au near Elberfeld, where he continued to live and where his son also stayed. In June 1710, Johannes Bernsau junior married Katharina Gertrud Ahlhausen (1675–1760) from Radevormwald, the daughter of a lawyer, with whom he had two children, but both of whom died early.

Johannes Bernsau initially worked as a merchant on the farm on the Au. He was first proposed for the office of mayor in 1721. However, since he did not have citizenship because he did not live in Elberfeld itself but on the nearby farm, his name was removed from the list of proposals before the election. He later moved to Elberfeld and became a citizen of the city. In 1733 it was proposed again and also elected mayor. Accordingly, in 1734 he was the city judge of Elberfeld. He died in March 1750, the funeral took place on March 28th.
