Johannes Conrads (Mayor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Conrads (born November 1680 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ); † 1735 ibid) was mayor of Elberfeld.

Johannes Conrads was born as the son of his father of the same name, who moved from Dortmund, and his first wife Anna Maria Teschemacher (1652-1683). Through them, the family was related to the Teschemacher family, which had produced several mayors. The merchant and Winkelier Johannes Conrads the elder moved to Elberfeld at the end of the 17th century, where his son was baptized on November 24, 1680. Johannes Conrads the younger married Anna Margareta aus'm Weerth (1682–1769) on November 22, 1707, who was related to several distinguished people in the city through her first marriage to Gerhard Engelbert Bernsau. For example, the former mayor Werner de Weerth was her uncle. Conrad's marriage to Anna Margareta had eight children, five of whom died as children.

Like his father, Johannes Conrads worked as a businessman in Elberfeld. He was proposed in 1719 to common man and in the two following years for the office of mayor, but was not elected both times. It was not until 1731 that he was on the list of nominations again and received a majority of the votes. After he became mayor in 1731, he became city judge the following year. Another year later he was a council relative. He died in early 1735 and was buried on February 3rd.
