The Réserve écologique de l'Île-Garth is an ecological reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Québec in the regional county town of Thérèse-De Blainville .

The reserve was established in 2003 on an area of 17.23 ha. This is an island in the Rivière des Mille Îles , in the municipality of Bois-des-Filion , 2 km downstream from Rosemère , and almost 90% of which are at risk of flooding.

Bark of scale- bark hickory

The subsoil of the island consists mainly of limestone and dolomite . Above are sediments deposited by the river.

Silver maple and scale bark hickory ( Carya ovata ), a species of tree from the genus Hickory ( Carya ), which in turn belongs to the walnut family, thrive on the island . Then there is the western hackberry tree ( Celtis occidentalis ). These trees have become rare in Québec. In addition to Celtis occidentalis , the species of black sugar maple ( Acer nigrum ) and American pimpernut ( Staphylea trifolia ) from the genus of pimpernuts ( Staphylea ) are considered endangered or threatened . Finally, the red oak ( Quercus rubra ), the bur oak ( Quercus macrocarpa ) and the Weymouth pine ( Pinus strobus ) grow on the island . American elms ( Ulmus americana ) and red ash trees ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica ) can be found at a lower location in the middle of the island, where the water does not drain away . On the western tip of the island, which is also its highest point, there are Weymouth pines. Paper birch and red maple stand as pioneering plants in the northeast, butternut and scale bark hickory are in heavily shaded areas .

Flora and fauna on the island are largely free of human interference. In 2004, the island's insects were examined for the first time, especially butterflies and beetles . Map mute turtles were also sighted in 1985 at the nearby mouth of the Aux Chiens creek and later also in other places .
