Johannes Viktor Feitzinger (born March 2, 1939 in Troppau ) is a German astrophysicist and former director of the observatory and planetarium in Bochum .

Life

After being expelled from the Sudetenland , Johannes Feitzinger graduated from high school in Aschaffenburg in 1959 . The study of astrophysics and mathematics, he graduated at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics in Tübingen and ended it with the doctorate in 1972 with the work of the dynamic interaction between the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds at Gerhard Elwert . In 1974 he became a research assistant at the Astronomical Institute of the Ruhr University in Bochum , and after his habilitation in 1979 he was appointed professor in 1984.

In 1986 he was appointed director of the observatory and planetarium in Bochum, and at the same time he was professor of astronomy / astrophysics at the Ruhr University in Bochum. Feitzinger was co-initiator and founding member of the Council of German Planetariums in 1987, member of the Academic Council of the Humboldt Society for Science, Art and Education, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, member of the International Astronomical Union and there representative of German astronomy in the specialist group for astronomy Teaching (as elected delegate of the Council of German Observatories), member of the International Scientific Astronomical Society Germany. He was twice spokesman for the Council of German Planetariums for two years each and then deputy. Feitzinger was on the editorial board of the magazine Astronomy and Space Travel in Classes from 1990 to 2018. He wrote for the monthly magazine Astronomy and Space Travel in Classes, Friedrich / Klett Verlag from 1989-2019. He wrote the preview of the starry sky of the month in the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung from 1992–2012.

Johannes Feitzinger has been retired since 2004. For 2019 he was awarded the Bruno H. Bürgel Prize .
