Johannes Gallus

John Gallus (* 1525 in Erfurt ; † 17 . Jul / 27. June  1587 greg. ) Was a German theologian and poet.

Life

In 1554 he enrolled at the University of Erfurt . In 1567 he became pastor at the Reglerkirche . On October 18, 1569 he was elected rector of the University of Erfurt. The senior of the Erfurt Evangelical Ministry, Andreas Poach, advised rejecting the election unless the Roman Catholic celebrations at the handover of the rectorate were canceled. Johannes Aurifaber took the side of Gallus. The dispute continued in the pulpits until the Poach City Council dismissed it in Holy Week 1572 and made Aurifaber a senior.

In 1572 he became professor of theology and three years later 7th senior. In 1580 he signed the Formula pacificationis .

In 1578 the collection of hymns he wrote was published . He also wrote a poetic enchiridion , two volumes of epigrams and a funerary inscription for Philipp Melanchthon .
