Johannes Gaupp (also Joannes Gauppius ; * December 7, 1667 in Lindau im Bodensee ; † May 17, 1738 ibid) was a Protestant pastor who was best known as a mathematician and astronomer and also worked as a librarian .

Life

Johannes Gaupp worked as a pastor at St. Stephen's Church in Lindau from 1694 until his death .

His book on sundials Gnomonica mechanica universalis and the accompanying book Tabulae gnomonicae are considered to be his main work. On the title page of Gnomonica mechanica universalis , Gaupp emphasizes that his book is intended to show the lovers of this “graceful science” an easy way to make and use sundials. In fact, at the center of Gaupp's book is a small treatise on sundials by Henric Bierus , published in Holland in 1676 , a "short, clear, and thorough treatise" in which the subject of sundials is explained more easily than ever before.

Johannes Gaupp was a student of Erhard Weigel . His friends and acquaintances also included Eberhard Welper and Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr .

His estate is stored in the Lindau City Archives.
