Johannes Georg Seidel (* 16th May 1927 in Dresden , † 26. August 2017 in Weimar ) was a German dams - civil engineer . He was best known for his involvement and later management of the construction of large dams in the GDR (including Gottleuba , Eibenstock ).

Life

Seidel was born as the son of Georg Johannes Seidel (1891–1945) and his wife Berta Keil (1896–1929) in Dresden. His childhood was marked by the early death of his mother. After graduating from high school , he was drafted into military service at the age of 17. After the father had fallen, he had to support the family (mother and two siblings) in addition to his apprenticeship as a carpenter. From 1947 to 1950 he attended the Saxon State Building School and from 1955 to 1962 he completed a distance learning course at the Technical University of Dresden , which he obtained as a Dipl.-Ing. Civil engineering finished. From 1970 to 1972 he had an unscheduled traineeship at the University of Architecture and Construction in Weimar. In 1972 he was promoted to Dr. Ing. PhD.

From 1954 he was head of the design office at VEB Talsperrenbau and since 1964 chief technologist. In 1971 he was appointed director of technology in the special combine hydraulic engineering in Weimar. He held this position until his retirement in 1987.

Project participation

Seidel was involved in the construction of all the large dams in the GDR. He also developed the GDR's first semi-automatic concrete mixing tower. He also passed on his knowledge in the context of development aid to other nations in the construction of dams, for example in Syria, Egypt and Mozambique.
