Johannes Gremper (humanist)
Johannes Gremper (* 15th century in Rheinfelden ; † after 1519 ) was a Viennese humanist and manuscript and book collector.
Life
In 1501 Johannes Gremper from Rheinfelden was denied access to the baccalaure exam at the University of Vienna . He was accused of teasing novices and instigating a fight. From around 1508 Johannes Gremper became friends with Johannes Cuspinian , who had taken up a professorship at the University of Vienna, and in the years to come he worked as his secretary and representative. Johannes Gremper seems to have had considerable financial resources of his own, as he acquired valuable books and manuscripts, which he marked with his ownership note. Gremper's most important acquisition in 1513 was the Philostratos manuscript from the Bibliotheca Corviniana , which he received after long negotiations with King Wladislaw II . A little later Gremper left the manuscript to Cuspinian for publication. Gremper also bequeathed his remaining books, manuscripts and collectibles to Cuspinian. Conversely, no gifts from Cuspinian to Gremper are documented. This raises the question of whether Gremper, who is considered to be Cuspinian's secretary, should not be seen more as a friend and mentor. Johannes Gremper can no longer be verified after 1519.
