description

Vegetative characteristics

The gray bug seed grows as an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of about 30 to 40 centimeters. It is branched out. Young branches are hairy with branched trichomes , later they become bald. The alternately arranged leaves are sitting. The little or hardly fleshy leaf blade is flat, narrowly lanceolate to linear, with entire margins and acuminate.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

In short, dense, spiked inflorescences , the flowers sit individually in the axilla of a leaf-like, broadly egg-shaped bract , which is narrower than the fruit. Bracteoles are missing. The flowers are hermaphroditic. The inflorescence is usually missing, rarely it consists of one to three transparent, dry-skinned scales that do not survive the flowering period ( anthesis ). There are usually three stamens present. The pollen grains are of the "Chenopodium type". The spherical ovary has two free stigma branches. The flowering period extends from July to September.

The fruit is clearly compressed, broadly ovoid, with supporting tissue made from macrosklereids . At the edge the fruit is winged broadly, the membranous wings are at least a third as wide as the seed, the edge is serrated. The vertical seeds contain a horseshoe-shaped embryo that surrounds the abundant nutrient tissue ( perisperm ).

Chromosome number

The chromosome number is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The gray bug seed is common in Europe in the Florence zone of the deciduous dry forests and steppes ( submeridional ) and in the southern area of the temperate zone . It has been found in Germany since around 1836 and is considered a naturalized neophyte . It grows in dry, sandy ruderal spots and on inland dunes . It occurs in Central Europe in companies of the Salsolion association.

Systematics

The first description of Corispermum marschallii was made in 1814 by Christian von Steven in Mémoires de la Société Impériale of Naturalistes de Moscou , 5, pp 336-337. A synonym for Corispermum marschallii Steven is Corispermum borysthenicum Andrz. . (According to Uotila 2011, Corispermum volgicum Klokov , which is a synonym in Tropicos , is a synonym for Corispermum canescens Schult. ).

The species Corispermum marschallii belongs to the genus Corispermum in the tribe Corispermeae , the only tribe of the subfamily Corispermoideae within the family of the foxtail family (Amaranthaceae). It used to be part of the goosefoot family (Chenopodiaceae).
