Johannes Kirsch (politician)

Johannes Kirsch (* 1891 ; † 1951 ) was a KPD politician. After 1945 he was honored in the GDR as a resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Kirsch was a trained saddler . After the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, from May 1933 until his arrest on September 3, 1935, he headed the KPD group in Magdeburg 's Alte Neustadt district, which worked illegally . After his arrest, he was first placed in custody . The People's Court sentenced him to 5 years in prison on November 27, 1936 . After his release from prison in late December 1940, he continued his illegal political activities.

He died in 1951 of tuberculosis , which he contracted while in custody.

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor ( Johannes-Kirsch-Straße ).
