Johannes Meinhof

Johannes Meinhof (born October 8, 1859 in Barzwitz near Rügenwalde , † November 10, 1947 in Halle (Saale) ) was a Protestant theologian and superintendent in Halle (Saale).

Life

Johannes Meinhof was a son of the pastor and revival preacher Friedrich Meinhof and his third wife Clara Christiane Giesebrecht (1819-1893). He is the brother of the theologian and Africanist Carl Meinhof and the grandfather of Ulrike Meinhof .

In August 1878 Johannes Meinhof passed his Abitur in Halle, then studied theology and came back to Halle after his ordination in 1884. In 1885 he married Mathilde Köstlin (1860–1908), the daughter of the Halle university professor Julius Köstlin . From this marriage ten children (five sons and five daughters) were born, including Werner Meinhof , the father of Ulrike Meinhof , as the ninth child .

In October 1910 he married again. From this marriage with Dorothea Meinhof geb. Schmitz had two other sons.

From 1896 to 1930 Johannes Meinhof was pastor of St. Laurentius and since 1918 city superintendent. He died of old age at the age of 88. On November 14, 1947, he was buried in the St. Laurentius cemetery in Halle at the side of his first wife. His grave is one of the graves of honor in this cemetery.
