John Palaiologos (Thessaloniki)
Johannes Palaiologos ( Middle Greek Ἰωάννης Παλαιολόγος ; * before 1419 in Thessaloniki ; † after 1423) was a Byzantine prince.
Life
John was probably the eldest son of Andronikos Palaiologos , despot and governor of Thessaloniki since 1408 . He was thus a grandson of Emperor Manuel II and Helena Dragaš . Like his father, John also had the title of despot, as evidenced by a document from 1419.
In view of the massive Ottoman threat, Andronikos Palaiologos ceded his Apanage Thessaloniki to the Venetians on September 13, 1423 . Johannes accompanied his father into exile in Mantineia . What became of him after he retired to the monastery is uncertain. In 1428 the new despot of Morea , his uncle Constantine Palaiologos , appointed a John Palaiologos to command the fortresses of Pylos and Ithome .
