Helena Dragaš
Helena Dragases ( Bulgarian Елена Драгаш , Serbian Јелена Драгаш Jelena Dragaš ; * around 1372; † 23 May 1450 in Constantinople ) was the Byzantine empress and wife of Manuel II.
Life
Helena was the daughter of Konstantin Dragaš , despot of the principality of Welbaschd (today Kjustendil).
Her father died in the Battle of Rovine in 1395 . Constantine Dragaš was a vassal of Sultan Bayezid I. in the battle against the troops of Mircea I. killed.

Helena married Manuel II on February 10, 1392. They had several children
- Konstantin Paleologos (*? - 1400/05 in childhood from the plague in Monemvasia );
- John VIII. Palaiologos (1392; † October 21, 1448), was the penultimate Byzantine emperor from 1425 to 1448;
- Andronikos Palaiologos (1400 - March 4, 1428), was despot of Thessaloniki from 1408 to 1423;
- ? Paleologos, daughter (1394/98 – to leprosy before 1405);
- Theodor II. Palaiologos (* around 1396, † June 26, 1448 in Selymbria ), was despot over the despotate Morea from 1407 to 1443;
- Michael Paleologos (*? - 1409/10);
- Konstantinos Palaiologos (February 9, 1404, † May 29, 1453 in Constantinople), was the last Byzantine emperor from 1448 to 1453;
- Demetrios Palaiologos (* 1407; † 1470 as monk David in Adrianople ), was despot of Morea, de jure 1428–1460 and de facto 1436–1438 and 1451–1460, ruler of Lemnos 1423–1440, ruler of Mesembria 1440–1451 and Ruler of Thasos 1460–1466; ∞ Teodora Asanina († 1470), daughter of Paul Asanes from the Assen family ;
- Thomas Palaiologos (* 1409/10 * 1409/10 in Constantinople, † May 12, 1465 in Rome ); he was despot of Morea from 1428 to 1460 and from 1432 prince of Achaia ;
Manuel II died on July 21, 1425. Helena survived him by almost 25 years. She retired to a monastery and took the monastic name Hypomone (patience). She died in Constantinople on May 23, 1450 .
Among her children are the last Byzantine emperors. Constantine XI. took the maiden name of his mother Dragaš (Greek: Dragasēs).
