Thomas Palaiologos ( Latin Thomas Paleologus, German  Thomas Paläologos ; * 1409/10 in Constantinople , † May 12, 1465 in Rome ) was despot of Morea from 1428 to 1460 and prince of Achaia from 1432 .

Life

Thomas was the youngest son of the emperor Manuel II of Byzantium from the family of palaeologists and Helena Dragaš , the daughter of the Serbian prince Konstantin Dragaš .

In 1417/1418 he went to Mystras and ruled there from 1428 as a despot together with his brothers Theodor II , Constantine XI. (1449–1453 last Byzantine emperor) and Demetrios (from 1449).

In 1430 he was sent to Morea to help his brothers. There he married Katharina Zaccaria (* 1411, † 1462 in Corfu ), the daughter and heiress of Centurione Zaccharia, the last Franconian prince of Achaia and Creusa Tocco, and received a treasure from her family's former lands .

After the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, in contrast to his brother and fellow Ottoman friend Demetrios , he tended to support Western support and therefore fled to Rome after the Ottoman conquest of Morea in 1460. He converted to the Roman Catholic faith in Roman exile .
