Johannes Peter Letzmann
Johannes Peter Letzmann (born July 19, 1885 in Wenden ; † May 21, 1971 in Langeoog ) was an Estonian meteorologist with a special interest in storms. It was only after his death that he became known for Johannes Letzmann's guidelines on trombone observation, recording and climatology from 1937 , which made it possible to assess tornado risks regionally in Europe.
Life
From 1906 to 1913 he studied philosophy and languages at the University of Tartu and then, after a year, physics. Alfred Lothar Wegener aroused and promoted his interest in tornadoes (still called large bombs by him ) from 1918. Until the Second World War, he lectured at the University of Tartu. In 1924 he received his doctorate there. Between 1928 and 1933 he often stayed with Alfred and Kurt Wegener at the University of Graz and described the Baltic Tornadoallee .
From 1935 to 1938 he was a member of the Committee for Vortex Research of the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) . This prompted his drafting of the catalog of guidelines for drum research .
As a man of German origin, he was forced to leave Estonia in 1939 when the war began. After a short time he got the opportunity to move to Graz, where he continued to work until 1947. After his research funds were canceled, he stayed in Austria until 1969 and then moved to the Altenstift Baltenheim on Langeoog , where he died in 1971.
