Johannes Schmid von Steinheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Schmid von Steinheim , also from Stein am Rhein ( humanist name Johannes Faber (Fabricius) Lithopolitanus ; mentioned 1513–1529), was probably 1513 librarian of the St. Gallen monastery .

Whether he worked on the so-called Codex Gaisbergianus ( Cod. Sang. 613 ), as older research has assumed, is controversial. The Codex Gaisbergianus was commissioned by Abbot Franz von Gaisberg and contains various hagiographical and historiographical texts, in particular a history of the abbots of the St. Gallen monastery including coats of arms. It has been handed down that Johannes Schmid “was busy [...] with the history of the monastery and the order of the library”.

Like his fellow librarian Anton Vogt, Johannes Schmid seems to have apostated from the Catholic faith in 1529.
