Johannes Schornstein (musician)

Johannes Schornstein (born February 1, 1789 in Kassel , † December 2, 1853 in Elberfeld ) was a music director , choir director and initiator of the Lower Rhine Music Festival .

Life

Schornstein was the organist at the Reformed Church in Elberfeld. On December 22nd, 1811, he and the music teacher Sasse founded the “ Musical Association for the Care of Choral Singing ” (or “ Elberfelder Singschule ”). However, due to political turmoil, the association was dissolved again in 1813. The " Elberfelder Gesangverein " founded by the music teacher Dillenberg revived after the peace treaty of 1815 and Schornstein took over the management. In 1817, Schornstein organized a music festival in Elberfeld, which gave rise to the idea of ​​having the Lower Rhine Music Festival organized the following year together with Friedrich August Burgmüller .

Schornstein directed the Elberfeld Choral Society until his death. His preserved grave is in the reformed cemetery on Hochstraße.

His successor as organist was Jan Albert van Eijken .
