Jan Albert van Eijken

Jan Albert van Eijken (born April 29, 1823 in Amersfoort , † September 24, 1868 in Elberfeld ) was a Dutch composer and organist .

Life

Jan Albert van Eijken's father Gerrit van Eijken was organist at the Grote Kerk in Amersfoort and gave him his first lessons. From 1845 to 1846 he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and in 1848 became organist at the Remonstrantenkirche in Amsterdam . From 1853 he was organist at the Zuiderkerk in Rotterdam . After the death of the Elberfeld organist Johannes Schornstein , he received his position as organist of the Reformed Church in Elberfeld in April 1854 . On April 21, 1854 he gave his farewell concert in Rotterdam.

One of his admirers was Robert Schumann , who heard him on December 9, 1853 in Rotterdam. On March 10, 1855, Schumann wrote to Joseph Joachim : “He plays wonderfully; in Rotterdam I heard him fugues by Bach, also BACH fugues [by Schumann], the first and the last, on an organ that was worthy of him. "

Jan Albert van Eijken was the brother of the composer and organist Gerrit Jan van Eijken (1832–1879), who mainly worked in London .
