Johannes Tanner (politician, 16th century)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Tanner († after April 22, 1596 in Herisau ; entitled to live in Herisau) was a Swiss Landammann and delegate from the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johannes Tanner is probably identical to a man of the same name who was recorded as captain of the Rhode Herisau in 1553 . In terms of sources, he is only clearly comprehensible in this office from 1564 to 1589. Tanner was the governing Landammann in the Land of Appenzell from 1588 to 1589 and provincial governor from 1589 to 1590. Tanner acted as a delegate to the Diet. He was often entrusted with diplomatic missions as in 1578 because of the Rhine Valley affairs. In 1588 he was sent to St. Gallen because of the Gruber Kollaturkampf . During the sectarian conflicts, Tanner did not uncompromisingly advocated radical reformed positions, but sought a compromise. He is considered the progenitor of a branch of the Herisau family Tanner.
