Johannes Thomas (rower)
Johannes Thomas (born September 11, 1949 in Dresden ) is a former rower from the GDR . In 1976 he won the Olympic silver medal in a four-man team .
From 1970 Johannes Thomas drove the four of the SC Einheit Dresden under coach Hans Eckstein . With the foursome, Thomas took third place at the GDR rowing championships in 1970. After finishing second in 1971, the four-man won the GDR championship in 1972. From 1973 to 1975 Thomas drove the Dresden eighth and the second four-man of the club. For the 1976 Olympic Games Thomas returned to the first Dresden foursome, who had become world champion in 1974 with Wolfgang Groß as helmsman. In Montreal, Thomas steered the boat with Ullrich Dießner , Walter Dießner , Rüdiger Kunze and Andreas Schulz to second place behind the boat from the Soviet Union. For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
Johannes Thomas is a trained chef. After studying at the college for gastronomy and hotel management in Leipzig, Thomas worked in a managerial position at Mitropa in Dresden. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he worked in the logistics department at Mitropa's successor company. His daughter Christina was the helmsman of the German women's night, which won the 1997 Junior World Championships in Hazewinkel / Belgium.
