Johannes V. Swan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes V. Schwan (* in Volkach ; † April 19, 1540 ) was provost of the Augustinian canons in Heidenfeld from 1534 to 1540 .

Heidenfeld before swan

The time before Provost Johannes V in Heidenfeld was marked by the conflicts in the German Peasants' War . In 1525 around 4,000 farmers roamed the monastery villages and stole cattle. In Heidenfeld the granaries and wine cellars were emptied and the buildings of the monastery were set on fire. Provost Nikolaus Sturm immediately began to rebuild the buildings after the suppression of the uprising, although he had to borrow money for this.

Life

Johannes Schwan was born at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century in the Franconian town of Volkach. Almost nothing is known about the youth and the family of the future provost. Possibly he came from the Volkach family Schwan, who enjoyed a great reputation in Volkach as the owners of the oldest inn in town, the "Schwane" . Schwan perhaps attended the Volkach Latin School in order to pursue a spiritual career later.

Schwan became a canon in Heidenfeld and rose quickly within the monastery. When Provost Nikolaus Sturm died in July 1534, an election became necessary and Johannes Schwan emerged victorious. He quickly began to pay off the debts of his predecessors and to repay the borrowed money. At the same time, Schwan succeeded in recruiting more young members for the convention . In 1535 there were six candidates for ordination in Heidenfeld. On April 19, 1540 Johannes V. Schwan died.
