Benvenut Stengele

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benvenut Stengele OFMConv (born April 5, 1842 in Altheim (today Frickingen parish ) as Georg Stengele ; † November 11, 1904 in Würzburg ) was a German Franciscan Minorite father and historian .

Live and act

Georg Stengele was the son of the Wagner Josef Stengele and Agatha Rimmele. After the early death of his mother, his father married a second time. According to his stepmother's wishes, Stengele attended elementary school and learned the Wagner trade. It was only as a young adult that he followed his tendency to study and went to high school in the Benedictine monastery in Mariastein in the Swiss canton of Solothurn . From 1869 he lived in the Franciscan monastery in Würzburg , where in 1873 he took his religious vows as a minorite and was ordained a priest ; his order name was henceforth "Benvenut". He celebrated his primacy on August 15, 1873 in his home church St. Pankratius (Altheim) in silence because he did not want to provoke a conflict against the background of the Kulturkampf in the Grand Duchy of Baden.

As a pastor, Benvenut Stengele worked for a short time in the Minorite monasteries in Oggersheim (today in Ludwigshafen ), Schönau (Lower Franconia) and Schwarzenberg (Middle Franconia). The center of his life was the Würzburg monastery, where he held the office of librarian and finally vicar and was particularly valued as a confessor . Benvenut Stengele gained fame as the author of numerous local history articles with a focus on church history, which he preferred to publish in the Freiburg Diocesan Archive , the Diocesan Archive of Swabia and the Sulzbach Calendar for Catholic Christians. They mostly deal with parishes and churches in Linzgau , where Stengele came from, and in Franconia.

The community house of the municipality of Frickingen in the Altheim district is called “Benvenut-Stengele-Haus”.
