Johannes Wülfing (1649–1723)

Johannes Wülfing (born January 1649 in Barmen ; † November 1723 in Elberfeld , both today districts of Wuppertal ) was a German merchant and mayor of Elberfeld in 1696, 1701 and 1708 .

Wülfing was born in Elberfeld in January 1649 as the son of the merchant and yarn bleacher Johannes Wülfing (1613–1656) from Barmen. His mother, who came from Lennep , was called Christina Müser (1623–1698). The son of the two, Johannes Wülfing, was born like the father in Barmen and was baptized on January 10th in Elberfeld. In 1681 he married Gertrud Hüls (1662–1735), the daughter of a Reformed pastor. His maternal grandfather, Hermann Müser (1600–1671), was the mayor of Lennep in 1657. Johannes Wülfing and Gertrud Hüls had eleven children, seven of whom died early. The second oldest son, also named Johannes Wülfing , also became mayor of Elberfeld. His younger son, Anton Wülfing (1691–1771), was also a councilor in Elberfeld and the father of the future mayor Johann Jakob Wülfing .

Johannes Wülfing himself settled down as a merchant in Elberfeld and became a council member of the city for the first time in 1688. In the same year he was proposed for the first time as mayor of the city, but could not prevail against Johannes Plücker . In 1689, 1697, 1702 and 1718 he was again a member of the council and in 1691, 1693, 1695 he was again unsuccessfully on the list of proposed mayor's office. He was not elected until 1696, as were 1701 and 1708. In his last term of office, the city of Elberfeld was granted its own city court on November 22, 1708 by the Duke Jülich-Bergische government . It was decided that the last mayor would become a new city judge after his term of office without election. In January Johann Kaspar von Karnap became the first city judge until Wülfing took over the office from him in May 1709. Wülfing died in 1723 and was buried in Elberfeld on November 17th.
