Johannes Zumbach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Zumbach was a Swiss chronicler and illustrator . He was a citizen of Lucerne and was mentioned in 1426 .

Life

The only references to the life dates of Johannes Zumbach (or "Zum Bach") come from his own work. Accordingly, he was a citizen of the city of Lucerne and the son of the painter Niklaus Zumbach. He may be identical or related to a Lucerne citizen of the same name mentioned in 1357.

Works

Zumbach created an illustrated composite manuscript in 1426 with Schwabenspiegel and Konstanzer Weltchronik , which he expanded to include independent reports on Swiss history, including the conquest of Aargau in 1415. This oldest surviving chronicle of central Switzerland is probably not an official work. The chronicle was continued in 1431 by the city's signatory Hans Fründ with a report on the witch persecution in Valais . In addition, Zumbach also copied and illustrated two manuscripts from Konrad von Ammenhausen's " Schachzabelbuch " .
