The Church of St. John the Baptist is the parish church of Hergiswil near Willisau in the Swiss canton of Lucerne .

history

In 1605 today's parish Hergiswil near Willisau was separated. 1840–1842 the construction of today's church, which was dedicated to John the Baptist , took place. It was built according to plans by Josef Weibel from Lucerne.

Architecture, equipment

The church is 54 meters long and 23 meters wide, making it large for the area. The building follows the Singer - Purtschert scheme, which is very common in central Switzerland , but in a classicist design. The interior has stucco work and some ceiling frescos by Anton Bütler . Johann Bucher created the stucco marble work on the altars and the pulpit as well as the altar paintings. Among other things, there is a Renaissance monstrance in the church treasury.

Bells

Hergiswil has five historic bells in the high church tower . The oldest two bells in the peal both date from 1603. They are the two middle bells. The big bell and the smallest both date from 1865. Bell two dates from 1646. Not only the tone sequence (des, f, g, b, des) is very special, but also the different foundries, which are different here Times were at work. Each foundry has its own bell shape (appearance) and therefore also its own sound character called timbre. As a result, you can hear here that the bells are not properly coordinated with each other. Back then it wasn't really possible to re-tune bells. Let alone calculate an exact bell shape. She came out as she came out. That is why there is a strange but valuable bell in Hergiswil. Later offers from the Rüetschi and Eschmann bell foundries to replace the three middle bells with better quality new castings were found in the archive . But one didn't do this after all. However, when it was first electrified, bell four was only used as a chiming bell for the clock, but no longer rang. In the course of the external facade renovation and the renovation of the bells in 2017, it was included again in the bells and rings again.
