biography

His father Johann Jakob Purtschert came from St. Gerold in the Great Walsertal ( Vorarlberg ) and settled in Pfaffnau in Lucerne. Niklaus Purtschert received his training as a master builder from his father and in Paris . After he became Hintersasse of the city of Lucerne , in 1776 he was awarded the first order to build the new parish church in Entlebuch .

Purtschert was inspired by the Tyrolean master builder Jakob Singer , who worked in Lucerne, and further developed his late baroque church type in a classicist manner . Over the years, other churches were added in Wollerau , Ruswil , Beckenried , Richenthal , Buochs , Schüpfheim and Wohlen . The mundane buildings of Purtschert include the orangery of the St. Urban monastery and the town hall of Altdorf .

From 1797, in addition to his work as a builder, Purtschert was also a master mason for the city of Lucerne. In 1803 he received Lucerne citizenship and in the same year was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Lucerne , of which he was a member until his death.
