The parish church of St. Mauritius in Ruswil is a late baroque church building in the canton of Lucerne . It is one of the largest and most valuable sacred buildings in art history in the canton.

history

There is evidence of a church in Ruswil since the year 1000. The current church building was erected between 1782 and 1793. The construction of the nave and choir was entrusted to the builder Niklaus Purtschert , while the architect Jakob Singer from Tyrol was commissioned to build the church tower .

Exterior

The church rises with its considerable dimensions for a country church (55 × 26 meters) as a mighty monument above the village of Ruswil. The simple facades are structured by sandstone pilasters. Like the main facade, the transept facades are designed with three axes. The tower crowned with a late baroque dome is visible from afar .

inner space

The single-aisled hall church is spanned by a barrel vault of considerable span, which is divided by stitch caps . The ceiling is with Rococo - stucco and frescoes by Josef Anton Messmer provided. The lively two-storey gallery , which rests on Ionic columns, is remarkable .

An organ has been on the upper gallery since 1786 . The font , the pulpit and the five altars are designed in the same style, although they are by different artists. The black stucco marble sets contrasting accents in the light-flooded interior. Two side altars are located in the semicircular apsidal extensions of the nave in the transept. The painting of the mighty high altar in the choir is a free copy of Raphael's Transfiguration of Christ .

organ

Today's organ was built in 1993 by the organ builder Goll (Lucerne), reusing individual registers from previous instruments. The slider chest instrument has 47 stops on three manuals and a pedal .

Church buildings

Next to the church is the cemetery and a chapel for the dead from 1843, which in its outer form cites Reformed transverse churches .

The early Baroque parsonage was built between 1635 and 1655 and is one of the most magnificent parsonages in Switzerland. Noteworthy are the Dreikönigskapelle integrated into the building, as well as the paneled chapter hall , the stone hall and the hunting room. The church treasure is also kept in the rectory .
