Johannes van Gogh

Johannes van Gogh (born August 19, 1817 in Benschop , † August 12, 1885 in Helvoirt ) was a Dutch vice admiral and officer of the Military Wilhelm Order .

Johannes van Gogh was a son of the preacher Vincent Ferdinand Jacob van Gogh (1789–1874). One of his brothers was Theodorus van Gogh (1822–1885), the father of the painter Vincent van Gogh .

After attending school, Johannes van Gogh entered the Royal Naval Institute in 1836 and was promoted to lieutenant in the sea in 1840. In 1844 he traveled from Rotterdam to India. In Asia he explored the local fairways and wrote sailing instructions for these waters. In 1854 his kaart van het vaarwater ten noorden van Makassa was published. In the same year he went to the Royal Meteorological Institute in Utrecht and came into closer acquaintance with Christoph Buys Ballot . He became director of the institute and in 1857 a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences .

From the end of 1858 to May 1863, van Gogh was again traveling in Asia. From April 1865 to September 1867 he was head of the personnel department of the naval department.

In 1873/74 van Gogh took part in the two Dutch military expeditions against the Sultanate of Aceh .

Further trips followed until he returned home in August 1874 and was appointed knight of the Military Wilhelms Order, third class, on October 6th. Van Gogh was later made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .
