Johannes van Heeck

Johannes van Heeck (born February 2, 1579 in Deventer ; † after 1616), also Johann Heck, Johannes Heckius, Italian Giovanni Ecchio , was a Dutch doctor , naturalist, alchemist and astrologer . He was one of the co-founders of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome.

Life

Johannes van Heeck received basic training in Latin and Greek as well as astronomy and astrology in the Netherlands and acquired some theological knowledge. Because of the persecution of the Catholics by the Calvinists , he left his homeland as a young man and went to Italy. He studied medicine at the University of Perugia and earned his doctorate in 1601. He practiced the medical profession first in Maenza and then in Scandriglia on the territory of Duke Giovanni Corsini .

He wrote various medical texts in which he deals with the extent to which astrological factors influence people's diseases and to what extent astrology should be consulted by the doctor in diagnosis and therapy.

Johannes van Heeck was a founding member of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome. After the dissolution of the Academy in 1604, he left Rome and led a restless wandering life in Italy and Europe until he finally found a job at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague .
